My name is Rapherd. I don’t remember my littermates. However, I do remember my humans, Ken and Joan. They were kind, and I lived in luxury. It then plunged back into total darkness with the earsplitting roar of thunder. Terror gripped me. I saw large waves rise above the boat, and amid the chaos, it capsized, plunging me into darkness.

I awoke to a scary reality; I found myself clinging to a part of the boat that had broken off. I let out desperate howls and yips, calling for my humans. I barked until my throat was sore, but all my calls returned unanswered. The thought of being alone scared me more than the thunderstorm did. I was filled with terror and desperation.

I began to lose hope. Each moment seemed forever, and the possibility of my survival dwindled. My legs were tired. I was hungry, and my throat was parched from all the barking. An ember of hope flickered within me as I looked up and saw a vague shape on the horizon. At first, I thought it was a boat, but as I got closer, I saw it was the peak of a tall mountain. That sight fueled my hope; I mustered my strength and started pumping my rear legs. I know my humans must be there.

I was eager to have my feet on dry land again, which spurred me on. I caught a stream of familiar and unique scents as I approached the shoreline. The muscles in my hind legs burned; however, I swam with great resolve to find my humans. I was so exhausted that I collapsed on the shore. I could hardly catch my breath, I almost passed out, and with great endeavor, I lifted my nose, trying to catch the scent of my humans.
